There's something oddly satisfying about folding a vegetable that actually looks like one. The origami green onion is one of those tiny models that sneak up on you — a few humble folds of paper, and suddenly you've got a slender stalk with a pale base and a green tip, ready to be dropped into a paper bento or lined up in a miniature garden.

If you've been folding for five minutes or five years, this one's a lovely quick win: no tricky bases, no stress, just clean creases and a satisfying little result at the end.

Learn how to fold an origami green onion. It’s simple enough for anyone to make, so do give it a try.

How to Fold a Green Onion

Cut a sheet of origami paper in half and use one of the halves.

STEP 1. Fold it in half and crease.

STEP 2. Fold the edges so they line up with the crease.

STEP 3. Open it up and turn it over.

STEP 4. Fold it so the creases line up.

STEP 5. Fold the inner corner as shown and make a crease.

STEP 6. Fold it inward along the crease.

STEP 7. Turn it over and fold the corners.

STEP 8. Then fold the corners as shown.

STEP 9. Fold it back at a point one-third up from the bottom.

Turn it over so the white and green sections each take up half.

STEP 10. Fold the left and right edges toward the center.

Turn it over, and your green onion is complete.
