There's a special kind of satisfaction in modular origami — folding the same little piece again and again, then watching them lock together into something bigger than the sum of their parts. This hexagonal box is a perfect taste of that magic: six identical units, a dab of glue, and suddenly you've got a tidy six-sided container with real character.

It's the kind of project you can make while chatting, and because every piece is the same, you'll find a rhythm fast. Try a rainbow of units for the kids' version, or go sleek and monochrome for a desk that means business.

How to Fold

STEP 1. Fold it in half and crease. Line the blue line up with the crease you just made (the red line) and fold to add another crease.

STEP 2. Fold the four corners as shown in the photo.

STEP 3. Fold along the dotted line.

STEP 4. Turn the paper over.

STEP 5. Fold it in half to make a crease (red line), then line the red line up with the blue line and fold.

STEP 6. It should now look like this.

STEP 7. Tuck the flap inside.

STEP 8. You now have one unit.

STEP 9. Make six identical units in total.

STEP 10. Glue the units together to complete your hexagonal box!

Tips for Folding

Double-sided tape gives you a clean, easy bond.

It’s quick and simple to make!

For children, pick bright, colorful paper; for a more grown-up look, a single black sheet works nicely.
