Stag beetle
The stag beetle — with its dramatic, antler-like mandibles — is one of the most impressive insects to recreate in paper, and this design captures that bold look with a surprisingly simple sequence of folds. You'll start from a single sheet, build symmetric mountain and valley creases to shape the body and legs, and finish with a few offset folds that give the beetle its characteristic silhouette. It's a satisfying make for older kids, bug fans, and anyone who enjoys a slightly more detailed origami project. Grab a square of paper and let's fold your own little beetle.
How to Fold a Stag Beetle (with Step-by-Step Photos)
Step 1. Prepare one sheet of origami paper.
Fold it in half along the dotted line.

Step 2. Fold it in half along the dotted line again.
Once the crease is made, unfold it.

Step 3. Fold it along the dotted line.

Fold the other side in the same way.

Step 4. Make a mountain fold at about the one-third point.
(Looks about right!)

Once the crease is made, unfold it.

Step 5. Fold it so the ✩ mark lines up.

Step 6. Fold it back so the tip peeks out a little.

Step 7. Fold it along the dotted line.

Once folded, turn the model over.

Step 8. Fold it along the dotted line from a point slightly off-center.

Fold the other side in the same way.

Step 9. Fold it so it aligns with the point slightly off-center (near the ✩ mark).

Fold the other side the same way, offset just a little.

If you turn this over …

Your stag beetle is complete!
