Every paper town needs a house, and this one comes together in just seven steps. A center crease, a few edges brought to the middle, and a roof that opens down — suddenly you’ve got a cottage.

The best part is the finishing touch: draw your own door and windows and give it a personality. It’s a perfect quick project with kids, or the start of a whole origami neighborhood.

STEP 1. Take a square sheet of paper, fold it in half sideways to make a crease, and unfold.

STEP 2. Fold the side parts in to meet the center line.

STEP 3. Fold the top and bottom parts in to meet the center line, then unfold.

STEP 4. Open the top part downward, making the inside edges parallel to the bottom.

STEP 5. Fold the bottom part upward.

STEP 6. Draw a door and a window.

STEP 7. The house is complete!
