Not every origami sits flat on the table. This little “bonsai” is built from eight identical folded pieces that you clip together into a round, plant-like ball — cheerful, colorful, and a bit sculptural.

Each piece is simple on its own; the magic is in the assembly. Pick two or three paper colors and you’ll end up with something that looks great in a bowl or hung as a wreath.

Way of folding

STEP 1. Turn the white side up and make a diagonal crease (triangle).

STEP 2. After unfolding, fold each of the four corners toward the center.

STEP 3. Make a crease and unfold it.

STEP 4. Fold the four corners to the creases and turn them inside out.

STEP 5. Fold it in half.

STEP 6. Fold it in half vertically.

STEP 7. Fold the bottom up toward the center.

STEP 8. Fold the top two overlapping pieces along the dotted line.

STEP 9. One petal piece is ready.

STEP 10. Make 8 of the same piece.

STEP 11. Join two pieces together as shown.

STEP 12. In the same way, join four pieces into a group.

STEP 13. Combine the groups so they form a round shape.

Tips for folding

Press the creases of each piece firmly. It is easiest to join them by securing with glue or tape.

This time I made it in two colors, but you can make a lovely piece by using all different colors, or by folding with pretty wrapping paper, newspaper, and so on.

Because it forms a ring, it can also be arranged as a wreath.
